White Monday

We had Black Friday, which is one of the most bizarre days I can imagine.  It’s a caricature of consumerism (which I admit I did partake of, elbows cocked at 90 degrees as I worked my way up Fifth Avenue) shot through with a dose of adrenaline.  

What if we created it’s antithesis, or antidote - White Monday? A day to do meaningful work, read, talk to people who have nothing to sell us, eat modestly, refrain from excess in general, spend no money?  Just a concept.  I bet we’d all feel and sleep a lot better - it’s hard to have buyer’s remorse after a hard day of work.  This won’t generate a lot of sales to boost the GNP, or make people set their alarms alarmingly early, but it could create a wave of being present instead of buying presents.  We might even be - gasp - happier!  Imagine...
